South Fulton, Tennessee, is a city located in Obion County, in the northwestern part of the state, adjacent to the Kentucky border. The town was first known as Jacksonville since the land in the area once belonged to President Andrew Jackson. The arrival of the railroad played a significant role in the development of the area. The community's proximity to Fulton, Kentucky, led to its renaming as South Fulton upon its incorporation in 1895. The name reflects its location south of Fulton, which was named in honor of inventor Robert Fulton. South Fulton and Fulton, Kentucky, are often referred to as twin cities due to their close geographical and cultural ties. Together, they historically hosted the International Banana Festival, celebrating the railroad's role in transporting bananas from New Orleans to northern destinations.
