Union City, Tennessee, established in 1854, serves as the county seat of Obion County. The city's name reflects its strategic location at the junction, or "union," of two railroads: the Nashville/Northwestern Railroad and the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. Union City became the county seat of Obion County, Tennessee, in 1890, following a legal dispute that resulted in relocating the seat from Troy to Union City. During the American Civil War, Union City held strategic importance due to its railroad connections.
